There's a new review of: 'COMEDY-O-RAMA SHORT #29: "Margery Dickerson" by Daws Butler'

The Comedy-O-Rama Hour

Scenes from the Daws Butler Workshop

EXCERPT: "If Samuel Beckett had written for Bob and Ray, he might have created this eccentric gem from Daws Butler, part of the encyclopedic archive of voice artist mastery curated by Joe Bevilacqua." (THE FULL REVIEW IS BELOW.)

Hey gang!

Check out this amazing review we got, or I should say DAWS got!

And be sure to listen to THE COMEDY-O-RAMA HOUR "Summer Italian Special," airing tomorrow (Sunday) at 8 am and 8 p.m. [ET] on XM Satellite Radio Channel 163!

It is a blend of the real and the surreal, a Fellini film in sound... including rare personal audio of my father and nana, from 1976, and STARRING: Jim Folly and Cousin Kenny Savoy as Marcello and Luigi, with a great supporting cast including Lorie Kellogg and Tom Giannazzo!

It will be available for online listening on Monday at: www.comedyorama.com

And now... the review!

Review Text:

If Samuel Beckett had written for Bob and Ray, he might have created this eccentric gem from Daws Butler, part of the encyclopedic archive of voice artist mastery curated by Joe Bevilacqua.

A pair of melodiously brogued men, both voiced by Butler, reflect on the strange tail of Margery Dickerson who "fell down one day and never got up." This curiously playful bit of blarney could be programmed as drama, story-telling, creative writing or as part of any discussion of the power of language.

Daws Butler was the great utility infielder of voice artists. His creations continue to echo in the heads of countless television-bred Boomers. To discover this Joyce-ian vignette from the man behind Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear is a double treat.

"Ah, the poor soul."

"The Comedy-O-Rama Hour is one of the most unique and original productions out there these days. With Joe's talent for different voices, I never know what's coming next, or what it will sound like. Another thing that makes these shows stand out is that it is quite obvious to the listener that Joe and his cast are having fun making these shows, and that makes them fun to listen to as well."

Review Text:
Scenes from the Daws Butler Workshop, is a voice actors delight.
Perhaps because much of the cartoon characters in episodes 13 and 14 are closer to my contemporary experience, I found this radio-documentary both educational, delightful and thoroughly engaging. June Foray, Stan Freberg and Daws Butler re-living the fun, playful moments which created cartoon classics, as well as opening the experience for the listener to discover how these character voices were created. Inversely, I found the acting from the earlier episodes (circa 1940's) slightly less compelling: partially due to the flat female voice actors abilities.
This may be contributed to the era's styling, or to the lack of direction given the female voice actor. Regardless, Joe transports us into the "secret" world of the voice-over genre.

Notes to Producer:
I was just thrilled to listen to Daw's excited spirit. Very contagious. Reminds me of my colleague/ friend, John W. Galt. This was a real delight, Joe. Thank you.

The Comedy-O-Rama Hour: THE ADVENTRES OF TEAMAN

The Comedy-O-Rama Hour

Hi Gang!

Here's an e-mail I got today from MITCHELL PEARSON, the creator of THE ADVENTURES OF TEAMAN, which airs as part of THE COMEDY-O-RAMA HOUR! We did 12-half-hours before is troupe of actors disbanded.

Check it out:

Joe,
i can't tell you how much i admire your love of radio.
the idea of the voice.
the adventures of tman came from my disappointment with comedy at the time.
there was a comedy troupe in the nearest big city, philadelphia, that were up for it and it was recorded in the basement of two houses in that city.
the leader of the comedy troupe was cast as tman and the most talented performer was cast as polfroon. i let the rest of the troupe take the parts they felt appropriate.
the duchess was played by two actresses thats why there is a scene in 'gas video' where the two characters actually meet, the first actress introduces the second actress, but the gag in that scene 'wooly curtains' fell flat.
dr blom was played by three different actors, although we often struggled to fill that voice the performance was always outstanding.
i myself am in one episode with one line. it was a running gag and we didn't have enough actors to read the 5? line joke. i think that was recorded in an office building in new jersey.
the duchess was played by two actresses, but maggie mccann? really established the role
there are only 2 female characters, the duchess and edna the mad scientists assistant
although the duchess seems sexually available it is edna who has the most fun.
we recorded the first 6? episodes for you and when your show was taken off the air, due to your support we recorded 6 or 7 more.
i always recorded the scenes out of sequence because i didn't trust the actors, so every-time there was emotion.
i think i knew the troupe was breaking up so i took 2 scripts instead of the usual 1.
we did a normal run through of just scenes for the first script and then we laughed and hung out and i presented them with the 2nd script and we recordered it in about the length of it.
Fun.

The Comedy-O-Rama Hour: "I Love Luigi"

The Comedy-O-Rama Hour

Hi Comedy Campers!

I am VERY excited about the recording session we did yesterday! Our good friend and talented comedian, Cousin Kenny Savoy visited us up here in the Catskills... and we wrote, improvised and recorded another very funny (if I do say so myself) CAMP WATERLOGG SPECIAL.

I am thinking of calling this one "I LOVE LUIGI" since Kenny played his 110-year old Italian man so well, the audience WILL fall in love with him. Of course, Luigi also falls in love in the story... to a sweet. kind, and STRANGE Mrs. Terwilliger, who runs "Save the Chipmunks", expertly played by my wife and creative partner, Lorie Kellogg.

We record all of the Camp Waterlogg segments of our show ON LOCATION, at our little home in the mountains and the surrounding woods, which, we hope, gives our crazy antics a bit of a realistic quality.

Oh and by the way, you Jim Folly fans will be happy to know, we got him into the act yesterday, by phone, when he played Marcello, Luigi's nutty partner and best friend.

Marcello and Luigi started as very minor one-shot characters in the COMEDY-O-RAMA Valentine's Special. You can here that one on our website here:

Valentine's Special

These two charming old men stole the show, so I gave them their own special: MARCELLO AND LUIGI GOES TO CAMP WATERLOGG, which will air on XM Satellite Radio sometime in August. I will keep you informed on the dates.

There'll be lots more new COMEDY-O-RAMA this year! In the meantime, there are plenty of new shows to hear right now at our website: The Comedy-O-Rama Hour

THE COMEDY-O-RAMA HOUR ELECTION SPECIAL with Al Franken and Bob Edwards

Commercial radio's Al Franken and satellite radio's Bob Edwards join public radio's Joe Bevilacqua for a White Rabbit romp through the Borscht Belt. This isn't The Daily Show political commentary, it's comedy derived from a classic radio tradition of Burns & Allen (Gracie -- and Fred) and Bob & Ray grafted onto Monty Python, Laugh-In, and early SNL (when it was "live" live). Comedy-O-Rama delivers improvisational theatre with outdoor location recording that sounds refreshing after all that canned air.
Midway through the first half-hour, Franken and Katherine Lanpher (late of MPR) deliver an Iraqi Day Parade play-by-play segment that ought to be required audio preemption for Macy's Thanksgiving event. But that's just one of many must-pick shticks where listeners will plump up the volume – including a laugh-out-loud reductionist editing of W's 2001 Inaugural Address in the second half-hour.

There's one simple reason Comedy-O-Rama attracts the attention of creative PDs – it's fun. It's PRPD's Core Value of "humor" delivered with a "uniquely human voice". Bevilacqua is indisputably unique, and as a disciple of Yogi Bear (well, Daws Butler, actually) he's master of scores of voices.

This is radio that invites listener's inventive participation in an imaginary world. It's not a driveway moment – it's a freeway freeform that's perfect fare between the end of ATC and the beginning of election returns at 8pm ET. Or anytime afterwards, since a good laugh can never be defeated and craziness will always hold office in Washington.
The Election Special is streaming off the net, beaming off the satellite, and screaming off cutting-edge broadcasters large (KBPS) and small (WYSO). Can't find an hour in your busy day? Individual segments from 0:23 to 6:08 are available at http://www.prx.org/piece/2493 for drive time cutaways election night and the morning after.

Hey everyone!

Here are just a few of our best station and listener reviews - Ranger Joe

The Comedy-O-Rama July 4th Special
Joe Bevilacqua, 59:00

Amusing, Humorous, Light-hearted
I listened to Part One of this comedy special. The programs opens with daughter Laurie talking with Mom on the phone. Within two minutes, I was chuckling. When Mom mentions her “lard and sugar” sandwich that she put down somewhere, the producer had me. This “visit to Camp Waterlogg with Ranger Joe and Ranger Laurie” in the Catskills is delightfully funny, with characters that are goofy and cute. Good for light, summer listening.

The Comedy-O-Rama Hour "War Of the Worlds" Special!
Joe Bevilacqua, 59:00
Engaging, Humorous
This one is a step ahead of other WOTW pieces because it features interviews with John Houseman, Arthur Anderson, and Howard Koch. There's nothing like listening to the people who were part of the show.

THE COMEDY-O-RAMA "LEWIS BLACK" SPECIAL
Joe Bevilacqua, 59:30
Engaging, Humorous, Unconventional
Lewis Black is an excellent comedian and you may know him from his regular appearances on The Daily Show.

This is a funny special, with a mix of interviews, stand-up comedy and sketches. It would work great for a holiday or weekend special. It should be easy to schedule and is not time dependent.

I found myself laughing out loud several times. It's well produced and has a good flow.

THE COMEDY-O-RAMA "LEWIS BLACK" SPECIAL
Joe Bevilacqua, 59:30
Amusing, Elaborate, Light-hearted
Warning! You are now entering a corny zone! Joe Bevilacqua has returned with his masterfully produced, [extraordinary] Comedy O Rama specials. Daws Butler's disciple has one again managed to craft an hour that will have you singing "Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh" in a wistful moment of Hannah Barbara nostalgia as the denizens of Camp Waterlogg return. Only this time the show features an interview with and standup from professional angry man Lewis Black... there is a loyal audience longing for these shows and the production values are absolutely incredible. An amazing hour of radio that is not for everyone.

Louis Armstrong's New Orleans, with Wynton Marsalis
Joe Bevilacqua, 58:30
Informational, Polished, Sound Rich
Joe Bevilacqua strikes again with this superb documentary on the life and music of Louis Armstrong. The rich tapestry of music, interviews and sound from the streets of New Orleans is expertly produced. In addition to some rare recordings, the program includes interviews with Wynton Marsalas and others that really add to what is primarily a music program, rather than detract from the focus of the program. The sound quality is excellent, and the vintage recordings have been cleaned up well. The program is both entertaining and informative, and held my interest for the entire hour. This program would fit well as a special hour in any local jazz program, and I highly recommend it.

Three Tales of Old Hollywood
Joe Bevilacqua, 12:08
Amusing, Light, Polished
Anyone who's loved watching cartoons growing up will love this piece. The title, however, may get listeners to think of it as a supplementary piece to recent Oscar news, it's anything but.
The piece is more of a collage of voices and faces behind famous characters of the cinema. For instance, Mel Blanc explains how he came up with the 'voice' for Bugs Bunny. There are revealing moments with William Holden, Walter Brennan, and the man who played Lincoln in D. W. Griffith's 'Birth of A Nation.'
Third part of the piece is a delight, quickly giving us sound clips of famous cartoon characters and the voices who'd brought them to life. The piece is good for broadcast any time of the year.

Losing a Best Friend
Joe Bevilacqua, 08:18

Who hasn’t wondered about former old friends, and had the urge to touch base? Joe Bev takes the urge and acts, seeking out the best buddy he met in second grade and lost in college. Fortunate for him, he’s an inveterate tape-saver and has priceless archival tape of he and his buddy from their earliest comedic forays. Twenty-one years after their falling out, inspired by Paul and Art’s vocal reunion, Joe starts his search and takes us along for the ride.

Joe Bevilacqua, 19:56
Amusing, Humorous, Sound Rich
I found it fascinating to listen to having as a child watched the Flintstones cartoon most weeknights before the BBC’s main evening news. I think this is a fantastic piece. I only hope Joe has more material with other animation pioneers in his archive. I would certainly be interested to hear it.

Listened to piece while working on a presentation. The piece did not interrupt what I was doing, but I found myself listening more and more. It really appealed to me and was uplifting. It shows how bad situations do not always have a bad ending. It also made me appreciate my father all the more.

From Moonshine to Armadillos: The Birth of the Live Austin Music Scene
Joe Bevilacqua, 59:00

This program offers a soup to nuts history of Austin's growth into the live music Mecca that it's become today. The show is more than just contemporary talking heads and music--it features an amazing collection of archival interviews and recordings (including tape of some never-before-heard early Janis Joplin performances, which should qualify as an authentic archival treasure). The writing is acceptable (but a bit leaden), yet the production is well put-together, flowing smoothly between many different elements.

Lady Bird Johnson: Legacy of a First Lady
Joe Bevilacqua, 59:00
Informational, Inspiring
This is an excellent, uplifting journey through Ladybird Johnson’s life, and her growth and transition to first lady under tragic conditions. It’s wonderful to hear her voice, rendered here in excerpts from interviews she's given and speeches she's made. It is especially poignant to hear a portion of her first audio diary entry, made the day after JFK’s assassination. Nuanced choices of music are a production plus, but the strength is in the spoken word. Wisely chosen excerpts create a rich experience. The hour contains a wide range of voices, from historians to those who worked with her or know her, and they pinpoint her influence on LBJ, and on the capital, and the nation –– particularly in the areas of environment, race, and education. She truly is a force for good. sl

One Song at a Time: Tales From The Kerrville Folk Festival
Joe Bevilacqua, 58:51
Amusing, Intimate, Surprising

This is a wonderful, enchanting hour of interesting people and music!

It seems as if the previous reviewer was reviewing from the perspective of what they wanted to hear instead of what actually happened at the festival.

I really enjoyed journeying from one camp site to the next, hearing the rain storm and floods, the concerts and middle of the night camp fire chatting and songs. By the end, I felt as if I had really visited the Kerrville Folk Festival!

A marvelous hour! A treat for the ears!

COMEDY-O-RAMA TELEVISION - 30-MINUTES OF HILARIOUS FAMILY FUN!

COMEDY-O-RAMA (COR-TV) is a imaginative free-wheeling, television show, filled with puppets and imaginative animation designed to bring families together to... laugh!

SEE THE 30 SEC. SAMPLE DEMO NOW!!!

http://www.comedyorama.com/incoming/cor-tv/cor-tv-06.wmv

Based on the on-going weekly radio hit (airing five times a week on XM Satellite Radio's Sonic Theater Channel 163), each half-hour of the TV series is like four shows in one, with hilarious and adorable reoccurring characters, such as WILLOUGHBY AND THE PROFESSOR, THE MISADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, and CAMP WATERLOGG. In addition, each show features a new UNCLE DUNKLE AND DONNIE FABLE, written and PERFORMED by the late Daws Butler, the voice of Yogi Bear and many more classic Hanna Barbera characters. These rare recordings have never been broadcast.

All segments include children characters interacting with adults, learning about the world and how we all fit in it. In addition, the stories are designed to spark the imagination and creativity of children of ALL ages!

The thousands of characters of COMEDY-O-RAMA emerged nearly fully formed out of the creative mind of JOE BEVILACQUA, who has been voicing the majority of them for his weekly radio show since 1979. But, it all began in his room in 1971, when his father bought him a cassette recorder and the 12-year old voiced his first WILLOUGHBY AND THE PROFESSOR "radio cartoon".

Now, 30-years later, BEVILACQUA is bringing these charming characters to television.

"TV is so angry and aggressive today. I don't think it is good for anyone. All I want to do is make people laugh in 2006 the way my family did at 'THE MUPPET SHOW' in 1976," says Bevilacqua.

BEVILACQUA is a veteran award-winning NPR corespondent, radio theater producer, book author ("DAWS BUTLER: CHARACTERS ACTOR"), educator and voice actor, who studied under MEL BLANC and DAWS BUTLER, the latter becoming his life-long mentor. In 2001, BEVILACQUA was awarded BEST RADIO DOCUMENTARY by the NEW YORK FESTIVALS for "Lady Bird Johnson: Legacy of a First Lady".

In 2006, JOE BEVILACQUA teamed with KARAVIDA TELEVISION, as one of the hosts of the "I-ON" public affairs television series.

COMEDY-O-RAMA is co-produced by Lorie Kellogg, who just happens to be Bevilacqua's beautiful and talented wife. KELLOGG is a CalArts graduate and visual and performing artist, who has worked with such greats as GRAHAM NASH, who has dubbed her "a combination of Mother Hen and Albert Einstein". Additional performance experience came in 1995 when Lorie worked with DIAVOLO DANCE THEATER at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh Scotland. Not only does Lorie co-write and direct COMEDY-O-RAMA, she also provides the ANIMATION and VOICES for many of the characters.

Take a Splash With Us!

As with the radio show COMEDY-O-RAMA TELEVISION will be visited by celebrity guest stars such as AL FRANKEN, SHELLEY BERMAN, NORM CROSBY and LEWIS BLACK. Other voices include those of "Liquid Comedy": a comedy troupe Bevilacqua formed in 1978 while in college, with Kenny Savoy, Jim Folly and Tom Giannazzo.

COT-TV takes place at CAMP WATERLOGG, which is based on the REAL place BEVILACQUA and KELLOGG live! Each week, with the flip of a carnival wheel, the COR-TV announcer (BEVILACQUA) chooses the segments of a 30-minute joyful musical comedy roller coaster ride, based on a simple theme (for example: water).

SAMPLE SHOW:
Segment #1: CAMP WATERLOGG, part one: "Stinky in Winterland"
